Benton business license guide
A practical starting point for Benton’s privilege license, home-occupation permit, current fee, and City Clerk application process.
Reviewed against official sources: September 5, 2026Who should check for a Benton privilege license?
The City’s FAQ says a privilege license applies when a business has a physical establishment in Benton, does business within the city limits, or operates from a home in the city. Home businesses also need a home-occupation permit.
1. Review the city’s privilege-license process
Use the application process and current application linked by the City Clerk. Confirm the business classification, address, employees, and supporting approvals before submitting.
2. Add the home-occupation step when required
The City says a Benton home business needs a home-occupation permit along with the privilege license. Ask the city what rules apply to customer visits, signs, parking, employees, storage, inventory, or work performed on the property.
3. Confirm the current fee for the business
As reviewed September 5, 2026, Benton lists a $50 privilege-license fee plus $1 for each person who works more than 20 hours per week. Confirm how owners and employees are counted and whether the business activity creates another city fee.
4. Allow time for city review
The City’s FAQ says the process usually takes three to five business days. Build that time into the opening schedule and do not assume submission alone means the license has been issued.
5. Keep state and special permits separate
The Benton license does not replace Arkansas entity filings, sales-tax registration, professional licensing, food or alcohol permits, building approvals, or other activity-specific requirements. Track each approval and renewal separately.
