Can you run a business from home in Arkansas?

Often, but you should verify the property’s local rules first. Arkansas small-business guidance says home-based businesses must apply for a home-occupation permit and notes that limitations can apply. The city or county controlling your address determines the exact process.

ASBTDC: Arkansas local requirements

1. Identify the jurisdiction for your address

If the home is inside city limits, contact the city’s planning, zoning, or business-license office. If it is outside city limits, start with the county clerk or county planning office. Ask which office issues home-occupation approval and whether a separate business license applies.

2. Describe the real business activity

Do not describe the business only as “online” or “home-based.” Tell the local office whether customers visit, employees work there, inventory is stored, deliveries arrive, equipment is used, food is prepared, vehicles are parked, or signs will be displayed. Those facts often control the zoning answer.

3. Ask about common home-occupation limits

  • Customer and employee traffic
  • Parking and commercial vehicles
  • Outdoor or indoor inventory storage
  • Noise, odors, equipment, or hazardous materials
  • Exterior signs and visible business activity
  • Changes to the building or use of accessory structures

4. Separate zoning from other licenses

A home-occupation permit or zoning approval does not replace entity registration, a DBA, a local business license, sales-tax registration, or an industry-specific permit. Food, childcare, healthcare, construction, and other regulated work may require additional review even when performed from home.

5. Check private property restrictions too

A city or county approval does not override a lease, homeowners-association rule, deed restriction, or insurance exclusion. Review those documents and tell your insurer how the property will be used.

6. Recheck before the business changes

Adding employees, customer appointments, inventory, equipment, a sign, or a commercial vehicle may change the original approval. Confirm the rules again before expanding the activity at the home.

Questions to ask the local office

  1. Is a home-occupation permit required for this address and activity?
  2. Is a separate city or county business license required?
  3. Are customer visits, employees, storage, signs, or commercial vehicles limited?
  4. Will an inspection, site plan, or landlord approval be needed?
  5. Does the permit renew, and must changes be reported?
